Early\nsymptoms can include redness, bleeding, and swelling. Untreated gum disease\nthat reaches its most severe form, periodontitis, can eventually cause you to lose\nyour teeth; it may also result in an abscess (pocket of pus) that can spread\nthe infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Is Gum Disease Linked to My Brain?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the American Academy of Periodontology, studies\nhave found a link between gum disease and dementia, a term for different types\nof decline in mental ability such as Alzheimer\u2019s disease. Evidence of <em>P. gingivalis<\/em>, a key pathogen in\ninfected gums, was found in the brain tissue of Alzheimer\u2019s patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This could be a result of bacteria in your gums being\nallowed to enter the bloodstream. Once they\u2019re in the circulatory system, they can\ntravel throughout the body and cause damage. Some researchers believe that\nbacteria may reach the brain this way and set off an immune response that can kill\nbrain cells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has yet to be determined that gum disease can be a direct\ncause of Alzheimer\u2019s or other forms dementia. It is possible, however, that the\nbacteria could cause existing problems to become worse. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can Protecting My Gums Protect My Health?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Dementia isn\u2019t the only serious condition that\u2019s been\nconnected to gum disease. Heart disease has been found to be more likely in\npatients with infected gums, although similarly a causal link hasn\u2019t been\nfirmly established.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While there\u2019s no evidence suggesting that healthy gums can\nprevent brain deterioration or heart issues, it\u2019s certainly true that good oral\nhealth helps promote good health overall. Continue brushing and flossing twice\na day, and always visit your dentist twice a year; they\u2019ll be able to detect\nchanges in your mouth that could lead to larger problems. Who knows?
